In case you can’t tell, I’m feeling a bit sentimental after a week of family parties, vacation and adventure…

Lesson #1: While cautious kids may be born (especially to cautious mothers), there’s no telling what a little encouragement from adventurous dads will get them to not only do, but enjoy.

Lesson #2: My parents and in-laws are proof that it’s not the number of candles on your cake, but the number of friends by your side that makes milestone years worthy of celebration.

Lesson #3: There’s just something about a Manhattan Beach afternoon. Even whining sounds sweeter on an ocean breeze. (Which explains how I survived working in advertising for so many years down there.)

Lesson #4: Southern California is home to some of our favorite people and places. A quick trip just isn’t enough—next time we must see more of them.

Lesson #5: Saying goodbye to vacation is never easy, but saying hello to good friends (with good wine) when you return makes all the difference.

I hope you not only learned a thing or two this past week, but that you’re willing to share in the comments. I’d love to hear from you!

Although the old tried and true is sometimes appealing in an already hectic life, one should really try NOT shying away from trying something new, be it a new restaurant or new playmate for your kid. You never know if it will be FANTASTIC! And if it isn’t… then you’ve got a great disaster story under you belt as a consolation prize ;)!

Too funny. Sometimes the disaster stories are the best kind, after all! Ok. Going to try something new this week.

Boys need their dads to challenge them and teach them to be good men. I don’t think women can even begin to appreciate this bond of father and son. I have learned in the past few years that this is truly the case seeing my grown son with his dad.

It’s so true. My boys know that Dad will play rough, be adventurous and make them laugh. Certain moods and times call for Dad, and others for me.
