You’ve heard people talking about something being the glue that holds a marriage together, right? Well, in our case it’s more like gluten. Because for as long as I can remember, Lenny and I have been faithful to our standing date night. Pizza and wine Friday.
Whether we’re on a budget and enjoying a frozen Digornio, or celebrating a big milestone with a perfectly aged Pinot, there’s no question some things are just better together. Like pepperoni and red. And us, of course.
So, in that spirit, I thought it would be fun to try a new weekly post. On Fridays I’ll share a wine we’ve enjoyed with our pizza (but don’t expect a lot of fancy talk…I’m a mushroom-and-bacon-loving kind of gal after all). I invite you to share a new wine (or pizza) you’ve discovered or an old favorite in the comments as well. No doubt this idea will evolve, but hopefully it will be fun. Heck, it will be for us, at least!
This Week’s Wine Spotlight: entwine
It’s only fitting that this be the inaugural pick since it says right on the bottle that the Merlot pairs well with pizza. (Well, that as well as grilled pork, mac and cheese, meatloaf, salami, tomato sauce and wild salmon.) And after tasting it, I can confirm that it does. Both Lenny and I really enjoyed it. (How’s that for an in-depth critique?)
What I love about entwine is that it’s a pairing of two of my favorites: Food Network (ok, it’s one of Big’s favorites…but I watch it too now) and Wente Vineyards (a lovely winery not far from where I grew up where I’ve celebrated many special ocassions). They had the ingenious idea to show wine lovers that the very same bottle can complement everything from potato chips to goat cheese to shellfish. And it says so right there on the label so there’s no guesswork (which is amazingly convenient for someone who can’t remember how to open my own front door).
T.G.I.P.W.F.!
To get to know entwine yourself, search for a retailer here. (I buy it at our local Safeway.)
Disclosure: entwine sent me a couple bottles of wine to sample, but I was not compensated for this post and all opinions expressed are my own.
Ed,
We have had Friday Night Movie Night with the girls for as long as I can remember…and it almost always includes wine. Duh.
I’m not going to lie, I will drink pretty much whatever someone pours for me. And like you, the pizza sampling ranges from the gigantic $5 pizza from Safeway, to something organic and fabulous (which the kids won’t eat), to a delivery from Mountain Mike’s (cheese for the girls, half meat lovers/half veggie for us).
What we’ve done a couple times – and what we’re doing tonight for our combo movie night/get a tree and decorate night – is get dough from Trader Joe’s, some sauce, some cheese, and make it ourselves. And by “ourselves” I mean me. For ours we’ll add some prosciutto and basil (or bacon and mushroom), for the girls, it’s strictly queso.
Glad to know we’ll be practically dining (and toasting) together tonight!
🙂
You’re so generous to include the kids. We wait until ours are asleep and they have leftover pizza for lunch on Saturday. Win win. I’ll be toasting you from across the Bay as you decorate your tree (so on top of things…I still have a jack-o-lantern welcome mat on my front porch). Cheers!
That’s so nice.. I will try out the entwine tonight 🙂
I’ve recently rekindled my love of the Hawaiian pizza… and I think I’ve brought Finn along for the ride :)! Matt, on the other hand, is firmly in the fruit-should-not-be-on-pizza camp. I think I can convert Seamus, though… 🙂
As for wine…. i’m a fan… period. 🙂
Love the photo – LOVE wine!!!!
Isn’t that cork great? I love it too!
